02 · The Pulse

A decade in numbers.
The shape of India's telecom story, at a glance.

From a stagnating, 1G-era industry of fourteen operators to a hyper-consolidated three-and-a-half-player digital backbone — these are the headline indicators that tell the story.

Indian telecom didn't just grow — it was rewritten. The same wireless line that cost ₹120/month in 2015 today serves ~25 GB of data — a ~290× rise in usage. Yet ARPU has only just clawed back to its decade-old level, leaving the industry to monetize a digital revolution at the prices of a feature-phone era.

Who has the SIMs?

India ended 2015 with ~1.03 billion telephone subscriptions — and ended 2025 essentially at the same scale. The story is not in the totals. It is in the tectonic redistribution beneath them.

The collapse & the comeback.

Between Q3 2016 and Q3 2018, blended ARPU fell from ₹121 to ₹67 — a 45% destruction of unit economics. It would take seven years and three tariff hikes for the industry to rebuild what one launch took apart.

Even with ARPU now at ~₹195 — a record — operators argue the right number for sustainable 5G & AI investment is ₹250-300. Expect the next tariff move when subscriber additions next stall.
05 · The Internet

From a trickle to a flood.

In Q1 2015, India had 99 million broadband subscribers — most of them on slow 3G. Today the country is the world's largest single mobile-data market, consuming on average ~25 GB per user per month.

06 · The Battle

Three survivors, one consolidated market.

Of the 12 wireless operators that began 2015, only three private players plus a state-owned legacy now matter. This is the post-Jio operator battlefield, with brand colours kept honest.
