When it comes to electric SUVs making a meaningful impact in India, the MG ZS EV has been a standout performer. Since its launch, this SUV has built an impressive reputation based on real-world practicality, strong performance, and tech-rich interiors. However, with MG preparing to introduce its successor, the MG S5 EV. Let’s look and understand the improvements expected in its replacement.

Performance Highlights
Under the hood, the MG ZS EV features a substantial 50.3 kWh battery paired with an electric motor delivering a robust 174 bhp and 280 Nm torque. MG claims a range of 461 km on a single charge, but real-world experience provides a more practical perspective. Personally, I drove a two-year-old ZS EV that comfortably delivered a real-world range of about 300 km.
Charging efficiency is equally essential. A standard 7.4 kW home charger fully replenishes the battery in roughly nine hours, suitable for overnight charging. For quicker charging scenarios, a 50 kW DC fast charger can charge from 0 to 80% in approximately an hour. Additionally, for shorter trips, a 60 kW charger can conveniently provide enough charge in just 15 minutes to cover an additional 80 km.
Tech and Comfort

The MG ZS EV doesn’t compromise on technology or comfort. It offers a panoramic sunroof, a practical 360-degree camera, multiple charging slots, and comprehensive connected car technology accessed through a clear 10.1-inch touchscreen. Safety is another strong point, featuring several ADAS functionalities, six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, and hill descent control. A standout feature that I personally appreciated about the ZS EV was the thoughtful inclusion of physical buttons for nearly every control. From volume adjustments to HVAC settings, physical buttons added an intuitive and tactile dimension to the driving experience.

Market Positioning
The MG ZS EV competes strongly against formidable rivals such as the Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Curvv.ev, Mahindra BE 6, and Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara. Positioned in a premium yet competitive segment, the ZS EV is priced attractively between ₹18.98 lakh and ₹26.64 lakh (ex-showroom). It currently stands as MG’s flagship electric offering, complemented by the MG Comet EV and MG Windsor EV in the lineup.
Transition to MG S5 EV: What’s Changing?
In 2026, the MG ZS EV will pass the baton to the sleeker and sharper MG S5 EV. Built upon MG’s advanced Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), shared with the highly acclaimed MG4 hatchback, the S5 EV is expected to deliver notable improvements, particularly in terms of interior space, thanks to its extended wheelbase (2730 mm compared to the ZS EV’s 2585 mm).
We will also see some interior upgrades including a roomier cabin, ventilated seats, a larger 12.8-inch central infotainment display, panoramic sunroof, and advanced Level 2 ADAS. Crucially, the MG S5 EV tackles the critical concern of range anxiety by featuring a larger 64 kWh battery, promising around 500 km of driving on a single charge and impressive charging capabilities (achieving a 10-80% charge in just 28 minutes using a 139 kW charger).
Safety remains a key strength of MG’s strategy, as evidenced by the S5 EV’s full 5-star Euro NCAP rating. This model particularly excels in occupant protection, achieving 90% for adults and 82% for children. Additionally, it offers comprehensive advanced driver-assistance systems, a robust crash structure, exceptional whiplash protection, and thoughtfully designed emergency escape features.
The MG ZS EV has set high standards within India’s electric SUV market by effectively combining practicality, advanced features, and reliable performance. With the arrival of the MG S5 EV on the horizon, MG aims to elevate these benchmarks further. If initial indications are anything to go by, MG’s electric journey in India is only beginning to pick up pace.
