Homegrown smartphone maker Lava has launched yet another feature-packed 5G-enabled handset. The Agni 2 is the first smartphone in India to be powered by the all-new MediaTek Dimensity 7050 SoC. The new CPU is intended for high-performance mid-range smartphones with characteristics and features comparable to high-end flagships. The MediaTek Dimensity 7050 SoC enables MiraVision 4K HDR video processing, high-resolution displays, MediaTek HyperEngine gaming upgrades, and a slew of other high-end mobile capabilities, making the new Agni 2 a desirable mid-range smartphone.

Lava Agni 2 is priced at Rs. 21,999 and will be available on amazon.in beginning May 24, 2023, with a flat discount of Rs. 2,000 on all major credit and debit cards, making the effective starting price only Rs. 19,999. Lava’s latest 5G-enabled smartphone, priced at Rs. 20,000, has the potential to dethrone some of the best competitive devices from Chinese smartphone makers. Why do we say this? Let’s find out.

For starters, the Agni 2 appears to be as high-end as a top-tier Android smartphone in 2023. Its front fascia is similar to those of OnePlus and Huawei’s high-end flagship smartphones. The rear reminds me of older OnePlus phones, specifically the OnePlus 7T, as well as some of the Honor/Huawei phones from the past few years. The 6.78-inch curved AMOLED display has a refresh rate of 120Hz and supports all major display standards and formats, including HDR, HDR 10 and HDR 10+, and Widevine L1. It even has a color depth of 1.07 billion for an immersive and rich multimedia experience.

The Agni 2 also offers a capable camera setup for a mid-ranger. The handset features a 50MP Quad camera with the Segment First 1.0-micron (1 um) pixel sensor. The Lava Agni 2 5G is powered by a 4,700mAh battery and comes with a 66W wired fast-charging adaptor that claims to charge the handset from zero to 50 in under 16 minutes.

Lava promises that the Agni 2 runs on a clean iteration of Android 13 with no bloatware, no ads, and no unwanted notifications, along with a promised upgrade to Android 14 and 15 and assured quarterly security updates for 3 years. The handset comes with 256 GB storage along with 8GB RAM for multitasking.

The smartphone supports 13 5G bands, which comprises all Indian and major global 5G bands- n1/n3/n5/n7/n8/n20/n28/n38/n40/n41/n66/n77/n78.

Lava is also offering Agni Mitra service with the new handset. The service plan ensures Free Replacement at Home for Agni 2 users. During the warranty period, the phone will be replaced in any scenario of hardware issues. Each customer will be supported with a dedicated personal ‘Agni Mitra’ to resolve their issues on priority.

Overall, we’re impressed with what Lava has to offer with the Agni 2. The 5G-enabled handset would be an ideal alternative to Chinese OEMs’ sub-25K handsets. We will provide further information about the Agni 2’s performance once we have it for testing.
