Out of 47 smartphone models launched, 31 supported 5G cellular technology.
A total of 17 brands launched 47 smartphone models in 3Q (Jul-Sep) 2022 as per Techarc’s report tracking smartphone launches basis chipsets. These models were launched across price segments; however, none was launched in entry segment (less than ₹6,000).
Overall as well as in 5G, maximum launches took place in mid (₹12,000-25,000) range with 17 (35%) of the total models and 11 (36%) being introduced in the segment. In the basic segment (₹6,000-12,000) there was just 1 5G smartphone launched.
In terms of OEM preference for the chipsets, MediaTek enjoyed an edge with 23 (49%) of the smartphones launched during the period using its chipsets. Compared to this, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon was used in 15 (32%) of the launches. Apple and UNISOC had a tie with 4 launches each. Google used its own processor for the latest version of pixel launch during the period.
Among the launches, 31 smartphones, which is 66% of the total models introduced during the period, supported 5G. These were introduced by 13 brands. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon emerged as the preferred choice of launching 5G smartphones with 5 OEMs using its chipsets which was very closely followed by Dimensity chipset family of MediaTek with 4 launches.
Overall, the OEMs showed preference for single chipset vendor, especially in case of 5G smartphone launches. During the period 9 OEMs each launched smartphones using MediaTek and Qualcomm processors. However, Qualcomm had 5 unique brands compared to MediaTek which had 4 brands. In the overall smartphone launches 5 brands preferred to go with multiple chipset providers as against in 5G, where only 2 brands used multiple chipsets to launch smartphones during the quarter.
