Motorola has added yet another feature-packed handset to its growing 5G-enabled smartphone portfolio. The Edge 40 is packed to the brim with high-end specifications and features that one usually expects to see in a high-end premium smartphone. Priced at Rs. 29,999 for the lone variant (8GB LPDDR4x + 256 UFS 3.1 ROM), the Edge 40 is the world’s first smartphone powered by the all-new MediaTek Dimensity 8020 chipset. The octa-core CPU has a maximum clock speed of 2.6GHz and is accompanied by Mali G77 MC9 GPU.
The Edge 40 runs on an almost stock Android 13 and comes with a promise of assured upgrade to Android 14 and 15 plus three years of security updates. Touted as the world’s slimmest 5G smartphone, the Edge 40 comes in two design options flaunting curved 3D glass with anti-fingerprint coating. The Vegan leather variant has a thickness of 7.58mm and weighs 171g, whereas the matte acrylic version is just 7.49mm thick and weighs just 167g. Both the design variants are IP68 dust and water-resistant, a durability feature hard to find in the sub-30K price segment.
The smartphone flaunts the segment’s first 144Hz 3D curved display. It’s a 6.55-inch pOLED panel with HDR10+ support and a peak brightness of 1200 nits. The screen’s borderless 3D curved edges give the front fascia a rather premium look, something not very easy to find in the sub-30K price segment. The display is capable of producing a wider range of colors, thanks to the DCI-P3 color support. For audio, the Edge 40 gets dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support.
The Edge 40 features a 50MP OIS-enabled primary camera with a rather wide f/1.4 aperture and PDAF support that should deliver vibrant and well-exposed images and videos. It is accompanied by a 13MP wide-angle camera with macro vision technology to capture macro shots. For selfies, the smartphone flaunts a 32MP f/2.4 aperture sensor.
As far as the battery and charging are concerned, the Edge 40 is powered by a 4,400mAh cell with support of 68W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. The dual SIM handset (pSIM+eSIM) supports 14 5G bands (n1/2/3/5/7/8/20/28/38/40/41/66/77/78) and gets Bluetooth 5.2, and Wi-Fi 6 for wireless connectivity.
We’ll go into more depth regarding the handset’s real-world performance once we have it for thorough testing; nevertheless, based on the specs alone, we can say that Motorola has created a solid value-flagship offering for the masses. If the feature list lives up to expectations, the new Edge 40 might pose a serious threat to Realme, Xiaomi, Samsung, and OnePlus handsets.
